Finally Buhari, Militants Agree

THE Federal Government has agreed a temporary ceasefire with the Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups in the South-South on Tuesday.

The ceasefire, which is expected to span for 30 days is expected to give President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration ample time to fashion out a lasting solution to the perennial problems in the oil-rich region.

While presenting some conditions to ending the incessant bombings of Federal Government properties in the Niger Delta, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) had listed the opening of the Maritime University as one of the conditions for ending the destruction of oil facilities in the region.

Only last Thursday, the Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu paid a fact-finding visit to the temporary site of the Maritime University at Kurutie, Delta State.

The attacks on pipeline and other facilities have reduced oil production in the country to an all time low and have also worsen the electricity situation, which the Minister of Works, Housing and Power, Babatunde Fashola, has attributed to the activities of militants in the south-south.
