Military Plane Disappears With 20 On Board In India

An Indian military plane with more than 20 people on board has gone missing over the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Air Force (AIF) has confirmed to BBC. The Antonov-32 transporter aircraft which took off from Chennai (Madras) in southern India at 8.30 am lost radar contact just 15 minutes after take off, Indian air force authorities revealed. It was scheduled to land at 11.30am at Port Blair. A navy spokesman told the Reuters news agency that surveillance planes and ships were looking for the missing aircraft.

The aircraft, which was carrying service personnel to islands near the Malacca Straits where India has a military base, can fly for up to four hours without refuelling. Meanwhile, eight more warships have now joined the search.
