Bloating, acne, mood swings, loss of libido. If you’re currently taking long-term contraception like the combined pill, you’ll likely have experienced some of the above side effects. But to prevent an unwanted pregnancy, it’s something women are often willing to just suck up. Sadly, the same can’t be said for our male counterparts currently trialing male contraception.

While women may have rejoiced in the news that the injected male contraceptive is now........

Lebanon Elects New Prsident

Lebanese MPs have elected a staunch ally of Iran as president, ending a paralysing two-year standoff rooted in a broader rivalry between Tehran and Saudi Arabia. The appointment of retired general Michel Aoun, 81, came after he gained the backing of the former Lebanese prime minister Saad al-Hariri, Riyadh’s preferred leader, and further edges the balance of power in the region towards Iran and its allies. The pact also politically legitimises Hezbollah as a nationalist group with cross-sectarian support – a landmark moment for an organisation .....

The Demons In Aso Villa

Column By Ikeogu Oke Reuben Abati’s widely published piece, “The Spiritual Side of Aso Villa,” deserves very critical attention for its implication for accountability.  That implication, which I consider harmful, is that it creates grounds for anyone who has operated and may operate from Aso Villa, our country’s seat of power, to argue their exoneration for any wrong attributable to them on the grounds that the villa, as Abati would have us believe, is a place where “the forces of darkness” hold sway and control the actions of its inhabitants. Indeed, if we accept that people act under the influence of such forces which they cannot resist, why hold them accountable for their actions even by law, which considers acting under duress – in this case the duress of demons – as a basis for the exculpation of an accused person? So if we asked the first tenant of the villa as Head of State why he annulled the June 12, 1993, presidential election, an act many consider wrong for the attendant e…

Speaking in an interview with The Nation in Abuja, NLC President Comrade Ayuba Wabba said the idea of borrowing to build infrastructure around the world was not a bad idea, but he emphasised on accountability and transparency. “All over the world, critical infrastructure are needed. In the case of Nigeria, one critical infrastructure that will drive development is power. “Once we don’t get stable power supply to power industries, motivate small and medium scale enterprises, we cannot actually arrive. Buhari Sets To Re-arrest GEJ

resident Muhammadu Buhari is weighing options on calls for arrest of former President Goodluck Jonathan over his roles in series of corruption cases that allegedly characterized his government, National Mirror can authoritatively report. The option is being considered even though Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, said last Friday in Houston, United States of America that the government does not believe in arbitrary arrest, but in empowerment of the nation’s security agencies to do their jobs. A source close to the president exclusively told National Mirror last Saturday that Buhari is more irked by recent activities of Jonathan’s wife, Patience. He averred that the security formations, including anti-corruption agencies in the country are given free hands and are truly being empowered to discharge their roles as claimed by Osinbajo. Mrs Jonathan, who was accused by many Nigerians of largely contributing to her husband’s loss in the 2015 presidential election, is claiming ownership of so…

CBBC Sparks Debate For Programme Featuring Transgender Child

There’s a new programme on CBBC online called Just A Girl. It’s aimed at children aged between 6 and 12. From its title, it sounds like a harmless, simple story of a young child. The kind of programme any parent would be happy to let their daughter watch. Unfortunately, Just A Girl has recently sparked debate on Mumsnet. Why? It’s lead character, Amy, aged 11, is a transgender child going through the process of transitioning into a girl. According to reports from the Mail On Sunday, parents have taken to Mumsnet to discuss the show. Many parents are unhappy about the storyline, labelling the show ‘inappropriate’ for their children. When I read these reports, I immediately recalled Cerrie Burnell. Cerrie Burnell is a presenter on the BBC’s CBeebies channel. When she first started this job, parents were worried that she would ‘scare’ their young children- simply because she was born without an arAs a person who has been disabled since birth, the negative reactions to Cerrie Burnell at t…

Catherine Wallace, a faculty member at Northwestern University, said fundamentalist Christians are the most dangerous threat to US security.
Ms Wallace, who is a Christian, said the country’s “religious right” was “transparently racist”.  She said: “If [Islamic terrorists] wanted to attack an American city, they had to hijack an airliner. If they want to blow up a concert, they need to put bombs on their own children and send young men in to kill themselves.” On the other hand, she alleged, Christian fundamentalists “in control of nuclear codes was a much, much greater threat. Christian fundamentalism is a malignant form of Christianity.” She said the religious far-right was rooted in racism dating back to opposition to the Civil Rights campaign that saw activists like Martin Luther King put an end to segregation in US society.  Ms Wallace said: “The religious right in its most contemporary form has an origin in Southern opposition to desegregation and to the Civil Rights Movement, …

Why Sex Will Outlive Nigeria

There are very few places on earth and in the 21st century where an administration could announce casually, via a letter to the legislature, that she has decided to borrow $30 billion in foreign loans - from the IMF, the World Bank, China - and not cause a record-breaking earthquake.

Where I live, a Federal Minister recently caused a Category 5 hurricane by spending $3,700 on local shuttle transportation during twenty trips. Imagine if the government of such a country were to announce a borrowing agenda of............

"I Am In Charge Of The Presidency"

Following the news that President Muhammadu Buhari’s nephew, Alhaji Mamman Daura, is a major power player in the Buhari-led government, the President has stressed that he, not Daura, is in charge of the Presidency.

It would be recalled that Daura, who organizes Buhari’s speeches, whether on the economy, education or terrorism, has recently been accused of plagiarism.

He was said to have plagiarized a major speech delivered by the Nigerian leader in which the words of United States president, Barack Obama were inserted.

Buhari has however, described as mere speculation, the reports that Daura was the one ruling the country as the ‘true’ president, he was acting, insisting he is in charge.

He made this known in an interview with Osasu Igbinedion on ‘The Osasu Show’.

Buhari stressed that there can only be one head of a country, saying “I’m in charge, I don’t know where they get their news from.

“I stood for the election, I visited every Local Government in Nigeria, I travelled by road, …

Details: Fani Kayode Slumps In Custody

When Chief Femi Fani-Kayode was rearrested on Friday, 21st of October, 2016, in the premises of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, we raised a number of issues which included that the re-arrest was not only unnecessary but that it was also reckless.

We made known our fears that Fani-Kayode’s life was in dire danger as long as he remained in EFCC custody or in the custody of any agency of the federal government based on discreet information available to us.

This is apart from the fact that his health has been badly affected since his incarceration for a whopping 67 days based on some questionable ‘detention orders’.

This fact is well known to the EFCC as Fani-Kayode’s lawyers have written several letters to the Commission reminding them of the health conditions of the former minister of aviation

It is therefore shocking that having known these facts, the EFCC still acted in a most unprofessional and crude way by re-arresting a man who has never been known to turn down their invitat…
