Customs Uncovers 20 Containers Of Oil Declared As Di-sodium Phosphate

The Tincan Island Port made a mind boggling seizure of 20 containers of vegetable oil imported into the country, but falsely declared as dis-odium phosphate by the importer in a deliberate attempt not to pay duty to government.

The Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Command, Comptroller Bashar Yusuf, disclosed this while on a routine visit to the Terminal, attributing the huge seizure to the renewed vigour by his team to block all flash points of revenue leakages in the system.

He said, “A clearing agent named, Patwed Investments company presented three...... Single Goods Declarations (SGDs) with C-No. 102101, purporting to be carrying seven containers of 7588pk of dis-odium phosphate, while another  seven and six containers respectively had different pkgs of the same consignment (dis-odium phosphate). But upon 100 percent examination with other relevant agencies, it was discovered that none of the containers had dis-odium phosphate, other than 25kg kegs of vegetable oil.”

On the implications of such infraction, the Controller stressed that his Command will stop at nothing in its resolve to ensure that 100 percent examination is conducted on all cargoes, so as to nip every form of infraction on the bud, in line with the change mantra of government and top Customs management.
“Painstaking investigation must be conducted to identify those behind the illicit act for prosecution. The importation contravenes the import regulations, particularly sections 46 and 47 of the Customs and Excise Management Act, CAP C 45 Laws of the federation as amended. We commend the seizing officers for demonstrating due diligence and professionalism in the discharge of their duty. We are going to deal decisively with non-compliant importers and their agents. We assure those who comply with the extant laws of our readiness to ensure facilitation of their legitimate trade”, he pointed out. .Intercepts large quantity of Cocaine.

Meanwhile, the Command seized a large quantity of Cocaine weighing 214.732kg, as confirmed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), that the eight bags (25 pieces per bag) of unidentified substance found in a 20f container No. CMAU 045195/0 was  Cocaine  weighing 214.732kg.

This particular seizure ranks among the highest in terms of volume in the country , in recent times.  “This is no doubt a spectacular seizure, considering the well articulated intelligence coordination mechanism adopted by the Command in its resilience to achieve desired results. All  hands are on deck to ensure that Tincan Port continues to blaze the trail, especially with the recent commendation from the CGC and management to the Command for being at the Vanguard of due diligence and professionalism”, he said.

The Command also generated N207.8billion between January and October 2016.  This sum represents a positive trend in consideration of the prevailing  economic recession, which has become a global phenomenon.

Sunday Vanguard gathered that on assumption in Tincan, the CAC had re-jigged the operational and revenue generating capacity of the Command through some far reaching measures aimed at blocking all identifiable areas of leakages. During a recent meeting with key stakeholders in the Maritime Industry, the CAC charged them to continually educate members of their various organisations, on the need to support government through honest declarations in all their documentation.

“A major constraint, which we have continued to address is the issue of false declaration, deliberate misapplication  of harmonized system code on items among other infractions.  However, I am confident that with the measures,  which we have put in place, it will be practically impossible for anybody to manipulate or circumvent the process without being caught. We will continue the strategy of stakeholder engagement, training and re-training of our personnel as well as collaboration and synergy with critical agencies in line with the vision and mission of the Service. We will continue to remain on top of our mandate through strict adherence with the extant laws for maximum revenue generation”, he maintained.
