UYO: Stolen Baby Saga

Police have arrested a 30-year-old woman, Peace Chukwuemeka for allegedly stealing a one-month-old baby belonging to Fatima Ibrahim in Uyo.

period of her visit to a relation who lives in the same compound with Ibrahim to steal the baby. Chukwuemeka, who confessed to the crime, blamed devil and frustration as the reason for committing the crime.

The baby’s mother said the suspect gave her juice and plantain meal which was drugged to get her into a deep sleep before stealing her baby. Punch reports that Chukwuemeka later told the police that she stole the baby because she was married for 10 years without a baby. The suspect also said that all her efforts to conceive have been fruitless.

 ”Please it is the devil that pushed me. I have been married for 10 years without a child and all my efforts to have one have not yielded any result yet,” she said. 

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Cordelia Nwawe said Chukwuemeka drugged Ibrahim and fled with her child to Mbano, Imo state where the police traced to and arrested her.

Nwawe warned women to be wary of the friends they keep and from accepting unnecessary gifts from strangers. The PPRO promised that the suspects would be prosecuted once investigations were concluded.

In a related development, Onyebuchi, a trader, has allegedly stolen a child belongig to her friend. The two women owned shops in the same area and had started to establish a close relationship.

 A resident in Orodu Street who identified himself as Uche said on Saturday, September 26, Onyebuchi told the mother that she wanted to go to a nearby shop to buy soft drink for the baby and took the baby away.
