Tech. Startup Tizeti Set to Use Solar To Bring Affordable Wi-Fi To Nigerians

Tizeti, a Nigerian technology start up company which is attempting to bring affordable and reliable wifi internet to Lagos, before moving across the country and beyond Africa has said that the use of solar technology to power its Wi-Fi towers has helped it reduce costs for its consumer-facing brand,, Forbes reports.
While responding to a question in an interview on challenges the company faced in terms of powering and maintaining its internet infrastructure within Nigeria’s urban environments, Tizeti CEO Kendall Ananyi said; “We have taken advantage of the increasing use of solar power across the region and the decreased cost of solar panels. These have been paramount in helping us build a dense network of towers to improve internet connectivity. The telcos build for coverage but we have the advantage of building for density using small cells (1.5km in radius) to provide more capacity to the user.”
While responding on the company’s low and competitive data prices in comparison to some of the more well known Nigerian telcos, he said; “Because we build our own solar panel towers, we aren’t restrained by costly wholesale internet costs from large telcos who have, until now, dominated the data market. The use of solar energy also reduces overheads on generators and diesel, which are often used across the continent to run towers. Therefore, running our internet network from our own infrastructure allows us to not only keep our operational costs low, allowing us to remain profitable, but we are also able to offer competitive prices to our customers.”
