Breaking News: Speaker Of Kogi State House Of Assembly Resigns


Umar Imam, the Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, has resigned on Tuesday night, The Punch reports. 

It was gathered that Imam reportedly resigned to avoid being impeached during Wednesday’s plenary session. 

Ali Yakubu, the Chief Press Secretary to the speaker, who neither denied nor confirmed the development, said there was a proclamation on Tuesday evening convening the assembly for a special sitting on Wednesday. Recall that the previous speaker of the Kogi state House of Assembly, Momoh Jimoh resigned in 2016.

The House was enmeshed in serious fracas on Tuesday when hoodlums invaded the house during a plenary session and beat up a member, Elder Friday Sani. In a previous report by NAIJ.com, Lawmakers at the Kogi state Assembly escaped being lynched by suspected thugs who invaded the Assembly complex during plenary on Tuesday August 1. 

The invasion of the Assembly complex occurred around 1.40pm when the hoodlums who came in four buses stormed the chamber and ordered the lawmakers to vacate the building. 

“What kind of rubbish sitting is this, all of you should vacate this chamber or we kill you,” the thugs threatened. Following the fracas, the speaker Ahmed Imam Umar and other lawmakers scampered for safety through the doors including the member representing Igalamela Odolu constituency, Friday Sanni, who according to sources was their primary target.
