2021 is getting even better for Nigerian-born Greek professional basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo after he was selected as the cover star for the GQ Men of the Year. The 26-year-old along with British actor Tom Holland and American rapper Lil Nas X are covers of the 26th GQ annual Men of the Year issue.

The three stars were selected because they "had a profound impact on our culture."

GQ justified the reason for selecting Giannis and the others in a statement on their official website.

"This year, however, we wanted to get a little more specific. You see, as we started to identify the influential folks who made the biggest and most heroic impact on 2021, we found that they all share a certain trait: Bravery,'' the statement read.

"In fact, we feel that bravery is the most important and timely asset of this moment, and are calling 2021 The Year of the Brave. So we looked across the culture for people who embody the spirit of bravery, starting with the three cover stars that we’re announcing here.

Specifically about Giannis, the GQ website detailed how his heroics leading the Milwaukee Bucks to a 4-2 victory against the Phoenix Suns to win the 2021 NBA Championship played a role in selecting him as one of the covers for the magazine.

The statement on the GQ website about Giannis said, "Next, there’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, who does not want to be the new face of the NBA but probably can’t stop it from happening anyway—because of his inspiring life story, unrivaled determination in competition, preternatural charisma, and that awe-inspiring performance in this year’s NBA playoffs.

"Part of not wanting to be the face of the NBA means Giannis doesn’t usually do stuff like magazine covers, fashion shoots, or intimate interviews with journalists, so we are thrilled to be the exception."

Giannis has steadily grown into one of the best basketball players in the history of the game.

His rise being born to Nigerian parents in Greece has been an inspiration for several immigrants across the world.
